It depends what you understand as playing Testing the games refers to playing them under my understandings
Only the opened ones mainly to test different VGA hardware from 3dfx, S3, Matrox, ATi & Nvidia, also to support DXX_Rebirth, mainly the collection is my perfect way of creating reference of what has been made from the entire Descent series for PC, PS, MAC and Linux.
Freespace is apart of it which the Descent crew designed and ithe US versions carried the Descent name, though it didn't really had to do with the Descent storyline, it plays off in a different universe.
I also plan to use FreeSpace 2 for mods like Wing Commander Saga, one of the best FS2 mods in construction out there, with this I willmainly do 3dfx support for the numerous 3dfx websites I am regged at we have oover 18.000 active users that still use 3dfx VGA's and that are motivated to join in the fun.
But actually "playing" the games like most multiplayers do online, no not for me, as my main interest goes, is like I said above this phrase which is to test them on various VGA brands and find different image quality aspects, how they run overall and of course to mainly support awesome projects like DXX-Rebirth & ODF.
A true collector won't have to know this because he or she simply understands why someone would collect such an item or various items, the same reason goes with all the other things people collect you collect certain things because they interest you, this is what I have with multiple things and yes each item has it's speciallity, the Descent series were one of very few game types that made a revolution in 3D gaming technology, the storyline is awesome, as the entire idea it's self is very original, I simply collect this game series because it's the series ever created and it is something that will be very hard to replace or even beat tech wise, it's that simple.

heh look again I have all 5 variants for PSX including a Japanese one.
click the image in my previous post then you will get a 7.2 Mega pixel version shot of it, all my images are clickable.
The Play Station versions of Descent are on the bottom row beginning with the Long Box and from that all the way to the right till the Japanese version.
I can even see them in the 800 x600 shots lol, not that hard to find
Update!
Well I have now completed every album in my Descent Collection gallery, each item has been photographed separately, so here's the album, each sub album contains each Descent series separately.
http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/v/3dfx_collectors/collectors_goldleader/Descent/Desccol/?g2_navId=xc8f7da9f
Here's a Video I made of the entire collection of the games only

Well things just gotten even better some members from Interplay advised me to sign in for the Guiness World Records website and make a claim of holding the largest Descent games collection in the world as which they humbly believe..
Here's the topic at Interplay on how they reacted and advised me to do so:
http://www.interplay.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=10430#p10430
so here is what I wrote, it's alot of text but I think I have gained higher grounds this way thanks to the Interplay members and Interplay crew which I have had several PM's from:
You may want to keep a copy of these details for your reference. If any information is incorrect, please use the Previous Button to go back and amend the details.
Claim Title: The Worlds Largest Descent Game Collection Known
Country: Netherlands
City/Town/Village: Dirksland
Date of attempt: 12/ 09/ 2009
Record Details:
Hi, as for my real name it's W.J.B., but most people
know me more as Obi-Wan Kenobi & Gold Leader.
The record is measured by the amount of Descent collectors and fans
worldwide, my collection just seems to pop out all the time, the
record is based on these Descent games and Freespace games from
Parallax Software / Interplay, Outrage & Vollution Software which is a
sub game section developed by the same programmers that made Descent.
I collect Descent games because it's a game of it's own as also being
the first game in the world that gave a First Person Shooter a 360
degree freedom aka 6DoF meaning 6 Degrees of Freedom and Tri Chording,
you have 6 possible directions for movement forwards, reverse, left,
right up and down.
This game interested me when it all started in mid 1994 as the first
demo was released on December 17th 1994 and since then it only
interested me more and more then I started to collect a few , that
became more and now it ended to like some sort of obsession.
Descent is just the best game series designed and why you may ask,
well it has an original design, it looks and feels which no other game
truly has and we can all thank Interplay & Parallax Software mainly
for bringing these dreams to a reality.
Here's my Descent collection gallery:
http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/v/3dfx_collectors/collectors_goldleader/Descent/Desccol/?g2_navId=xc8f7da9f
Here video I made of the entire game collection, didn't add the books,
just the games
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hpQuVTpeSmk
So all I'd like to do is list the largest Descent Game Collection
known in the world, as many people I know from Interplay, the makers
of the Descent series advised me to go here for a listing, so here it
is then
Media:
Well here are all the forums where I have listed my collection all the
answers from the forummmebers seemed to be very impressed in it'ssheer
size
Interplay.com the makes of the Descent Game series,in this forum I go
under the nick name Obi-Wan Kenobi:

DXX-Rebirth.com a project I have joined to beta test on various VGA
cards and Operating systems, it's a conversion project to let Descent
1 and 2 players play these games with the OpenGL 1.2 API uder new gen
Operating systems as new gen systems, in this forum I go under the
nick name Gold Leader:
http://www.dxx-rebirth.com/smf/index.php?topic=852.0
PurePwnage.com a famous web series show that just made progress to go
live on TV, this place is also great for discussing games, software
and other PC hardware, in this forum I go under the nick name Gold
Leade:
http://forums.purepwnage.com/index.php?showtopic=91208&st=0&start=0
The Open Descent Foundation, this is a place where a group of people
where I am part of are creating a 4rth Descent game but an open
sourced version of it with an entirely different name and role script,
in this forum I go under the nick name Gold Leader:
http://www.odf-online.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=169
I'm the role script writer, I write the storyline of this game and
also the missions on how they proceed. the main game is called :
Flight Back : The Aftermath of Samuel Dravis The mission packs are :
Flight Back: Vengeance which is a the following story of the hero and
the other missionpack goes under the name: Flight Back: Unorthodox
with this one the player takes control of the Mercenary pilot hereby
taking control of the bad guy that is stopping the good guy in a short
term,to view my work you have to become a member of this site, it's
because of the information of our game which is kinda secret
Here's the main page of my team's websiter:
http://www.odf-online.org/homepage/index.php
This site is Descent Forum.net, this is probably the largest european
descent fan website, some other collectors are here as well, the
administrator of this site may have the second largest Descent game
collection in the world, he does have alot of duplicates as he did
describe in my collection thread and he also subbmitted that my
collection is much larger varity wise, in this forum I go under the
nick name Gold Leader:
http://www.descentforum.de/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4542&start=0
And last but not least I also made a post of my collection over here
which states me as Obi-Wan Kenobi is this cool modelling site from
MetalBeast:
http://3d-get.de/metalbeast/forum/viewtopic.php?t=43
MetalBeast is a professional 3D modeller he hs a good feel by making
Descent based 3D renders and models Descent games yeah it's
something important to me, it's the first real game I bought when I
was about 17 years old, I read a mag and it all made sense, it was
different that Doom, Hexen or Heretic, it was something that seemed
very challenging for the idea, the script and behind it all it was
just a perfect fit.
Descent: First Strike was the first game made , it first came out on
3.5" Floppy Disks in December 1994 for PC, PS1 & Macintosh and around
January 28 1995 it appeared on CD, about half a year later came a
mission disk No1 and it seemed to have been the only one made named
Descent: Levels of The World which came for PC,PS1 & Macintosh and
another half year from this came Descent Anniversary Edition, this was
a PC release only.
Descent Anniversary Edition included Descent First Strike + Levels of
The World & an extra 20 new missions made by Interplay programers who
worked on main Descent game themselves. In Q2 1996 Descent II:
Counterstrike arrived on CD for PC, PS1 & Macintosh, in USA about 3
months after the release of Descent II : Counter Strike came Descent
II: The Infinite Abyss for PC this was Descent 2 Counterstrike +
Descent 2 Vertigo & the Descent II mission Builder, this version only
came out in USA countries, for the PS1 came Descent MAXIMUM, which is
basically Descent II: The Infinite Abyss for PS1, the EU was excluded.
So during this time, which was about one month later, came Descent I
and II The Definitive Collection this is Descent First Strike + Levels
Of The World + Descent II Counter Strike + Descent II Vertigo & the
Descent II mission builder in a single pack, but even that the EU
market had this version, as where the US had a slighter improved one,
because it had a Descent 3 demo included.
1998 this is the year when Descent 3: Retribution hit the stores for
PC, Macintosh & Linux! PS1&2 were excluded in the EU as US.
In the EU it was tagged Descent3: The Saga Continues, The Linux
version was made by Loki a sepperate game developer for Linux based
games.
In 1999 came a small but worthy mission disc named Descent 3
Mercenary, the EU version of it was identical software wise, though it
had a different box art and a multi language manual and box
description as where the US version diid not, the US version of all
Descent games had bigger and nicer box arts even the quality of
meterial used ofr the boxes was of a higher standard. Why this was
done? I still have no straight answer to.
Q2 of 2000 there was a final release of all the games made for PC in a
single pack called Descent: Venture Pack, this combo pack had all the
games made for PC in asingle box devided over 4 CD's it was released
in the EU and US and this is the only version where the box arts and
material used for the boxes were of the same quality.
This is my description in susmary about all the Descent games made,
the Freespace series is a sub game it has nothing to do with the
Descent universe, only thing is that this series was given the Descent
name in USA only because it was programed by the creators from the
entire Descent series, so I do collect the Freespace titles as well.
All in all I have collected all the possible box arts made all
Playstation & PC games are complete, all the Official Strategy Guides,
all three Peter Telep Paperback books and all three MAC PLAY version
of descent, Levels Of The World and Descent 2, Descent 3 was never
made from MAC PLAY series.
This event is not in aid of Charity
So I waited a night and Wauw! it's working by the looks of it

6 DOF: movement along x-, y- and z-axis and rotation around x-, y- and z-axis (two directions don't make two DOF along a single axis, that's one reason why the coordinates are signed numbers, the second reason being that an axis only has one dimension).
now for interplays mistake: it's 3x 360° (since there are three rotational DOF).

I know 360 degrees turn rate, pitch rate and yaw rate.
Banking has a different aspect. same amount of freedom as in any Flight simulator to be precise, it's not that hard to predict

Do you collect all variated sell-versions of the game? or "only" the original ones of every country? I ask, because there are many budget versions of the games, but I cant see them on your photos.
No critic, just a question!
So far big respect for such a great collection!

Hello and thanx!
Well I only collect the originals and not the 3rd party ones, and so far I have all the original versions of Descent and Freespace, Freespace was made by the creators of Descent ,thus is why I have added it since they are both in a way of basics, Space shooters.
By 3rd party editions I mean them white lable's or the re-releases and such, these fal under 3rd partyvariants and not from Interplay it's self.
The original's from EUR and USA are the most important box art wise.

yes lots of asteroids with Freespace you had the terrains the good guys , the vesudans the bad guys and the Shivans heh they really bad guys
Asteroids were there o plenty too, you could shoot them then watch them go boom heh, the action in Freespace was extremely tense, these space combat sims have also been nominated as the best space combat sims every created.
Descent series is a series of it's own too, with it's 6DoF and it's rareness which other FPS games don't have

I love Freespace 1 & 2 too. With Freelancer its my favourite Space-Shooter.
For Freespace 2 there are good mods. One give great optical improvements and I remember one, which brings the Babylon 5 scenario to the game.
Has anyone fun to play a round Freespace online?
