Now I am able to use the mouse in D2, I want to make sure I'm picking up good habits. Could some of the real Descent experts out there tell me what control setups you use to enable complex manoeuvers?

hi mrglidos,
great work, about the keys.. well i am not a descent-pro but allmost all of d3/d2 players are using joysticks in mp/sp otherwise its really difficult to controll the ships-movement on 6 axis. (with keys only aiming is to unprecise)

would it be possible to add joytick-support to glidos? (i mean winport, not dosport through the sb-gameports, so that it is possible to use usb-sticks?) it would be enough to use the analog axis of the joysticks, most gameprofiler allow to asign keys to the buttons as you wish)

btw, that link might be interresting for you:

greetings,
DigiJo

Hi DigiJo,

Thanks for the info. Excuse my ignorance, but what is "mp/sp"?

About joystick support: have you tried it with glidos? I've been assuming it would work via VDMSound on Windows NT/2000/XP. It should do. I guess I'd better try it myself, otherwise I shall be misleading people.

Descent32 sounds like the ultimate solution. Really programs like Glidos shouldn't be needed when the source of a game has been released, but with D2X being a bit flakey, it seemed worth putting some effort into Glidos specifically for D2.

mp/sp=multi player/single player

there are great mousers out there. they may speak up now! =)
did you post this also on the dbb and the pd forums? i believe there are even more people who use mouse for descent.

does this post also refer to the keyboard only players?

so far, floyd

Ich bin ganz meiner Meinung.

I have only asked this question here so far. I'm quite new to Descent, and I'm not on many forums.

What I really wanted to know was whether people reassign keys so as to be able to do particular complex movements. Someone told me they always play with left mous button as forward and right button as back.

I want to choose a good way to play while I'm in the early stages of learning.

I must say, before putting mouse support into Glidos, I'd been playing keyboard only, and I was surprised how well that worked. I think, though, I am already finding the mouse easier, especially since now I can circle something while firing at it.

Perhaps i misunderstood something, but I hope, that Stick-Support will work too!
Most of all players do it with a Joystick!

Love, Peace und Vollgaaaas!!! (jetzt erst recht!!!)

Okay, Tiekiller, I will look into that. I thought it did work, but maybe not.

I've tried out using a joystick with Glidos, and yes it does work. Under Windows NT/2000/XP you need to use VDMSound, but that's a good idea anyway for any form of DOS game. Glidos actually does nothing to aid either audio or joystick support. That side is handled by VDMSound.

I should add one proviso: although it worked, my joystick is pretty useless (in calibration the little cross jumps all over the place even when I keep the stick still), and I found D2 totally uncontrollable. I think it would have been fine with a good joyustick, but I can't be sure. Possibly there was some lack of responsiveness. Hopefully someone with a good quality joystick will try it out sometime.
